ROWING.
JUNIORS—UNION v. POVERTY BAY UNION CREW WIN. There was a large crowd oi spectators at the rowing sheds, bridges, and other points of vantage along the river bank, to witness the races over tho mile course between the junior crews of the above Clubs, which took place yesterday morning at 11 o’clock. Mr W. Fraser acted as starter, and Mr J. Rosie as judge. The crews were : Union : Poverty Bay : G. Willis 11.0 (str) J. Martin 9.12 (str) H. Minett 10.6 (3) A. P 001... 9.12 (3) C. Dick ... 11.7 (2) J. Smith 9.10 (2) T. Fraser 10.6 (bow) J. Parkei|9.B (bow) From a good start the Union crew soon had a lead of half a length, which they had increased to a length and a half at Warren’s jetty. Hero the Poverty Bay crew spurted, and at the footbridge were within three-quarters of a length of the loaders. Both crews were rowing well, more particularly the Union, whose style was much admired. At the bathing shod the Union crew began to draw away again, and opposite tho gasworks had two and a half lengths to the good. The local crew stuck gamely to the stiff task set them, but were unable to reduce tbe gap, and by the time Evans’ shed was reached had rowed themselves almost to a standstill. Tho Union crew rowing on in fine style, won by about four lengths. Time, 6.25.
The visitors row the Gisborne junior crew this morning at 10.30, and on the form they showed in yesterday’s race, should again win.
