THE COMMON WEALTH.

CRITICISM OF NEW ZEALAND’S ATTITUDE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, April 5. The Daily Telegraph, in an article on New Zealand arid the Commonwealth, says:—“ Lf it is true, as some of the Federal Commissioners complained, that very little interest has Leon taken here in their Australian proceedings, the reason probably is that doubt is fell as to whether New Zealand, or its Government, at any rate, is in earnest on the question. By joining the Federation Now Zealand would have an open market of six States instead • of one. The commercial gain from Federation, in fact, is on the side of New Zealand, more so as the manufactories arc well advanced, that colony need not fear Australian competition. As to the terms of admission, the exception made in favor of West Australia in respect of the tariff might lie extended to Now Zealand. The control suggested by Mr l’eacoek seemed to go a little too far. It is time enough to go systematically into these matters when New Zealand lias made up its mind. All we know at present is that that colony lias remained aloof. All along the .Ministry has opposed the Federation, for the reason that the colony would lose status, which, if held by tlio people generally, makes enquiry and argument a waste of time.”
