CYCLING.

NEXT THURSDAY’S SPORTS.

THE HANDICAPS.

The following handicaps were declared last night for the Poverty Bay Cycling Club’s sports, to bo held next week: — Maiden Handicap, one mile.

S.ome optimists, states the Daily Telegraph, will say that the bicycle of to-day is perfect, that further evolution is impossible, and need not be even considered. From this view, however, there will bo many who will dissent. But of the latter, few will go to the lengths travelled by English cyclists, who have found fifty-five improvements possible before the ideal would be reached. The numerous suggestions have been brought forth by a “ perfect bicycle competition,” conducted by an English journal. Prizes were awarded for the best series of suggestions, and the first prize was awarded to a gentleman, most happily named, to wit, Charles Wheeler.

The competition would serve to show that .the bicycle of to-day is a long way from perfection. The winner of the competition suggested nineteen improvements in all, and among them were the following Standardisation of parts, variable speed gear, anti-vibratory frame, self-adjusting bearing, easily adjusted and folding handle-bars, a substitute for or improvement in enamelling and plating, improvement in spanners and nuts. The standardisation of parts would be a great boon to all class of cyclists. Many a cyclist of experience lias had to put up with make-shifts, great delay, and expense owing to something going wrong at an inconvenient time or place.
