DRAINAGE SYSTEM IN FOX STREET SAID TO BE UNSATISFACTORY
Six residents of Upper Fox Street wrote to the Gisborne Borough Council last night bringing its attention to “the unsatisfactory storm-water and drainage system at present existing in this street.”
The present stormwater drain which ran parallel with and down the western side of Fox Street was diverted through two building sections on the west side of the street, thereby eroding them, making the sections of little value for house purposes and adversely arresting the natural flow of surface waters, they claimed. “We feel that the drain should not be diverted, but should be continued down Fox Street to link up with the natural creek in the depression below Kingsley Street and which joins the Waimata River near Lister Hospital. Such an extension would require some 30 yards only of additional drain,” they stated.
The owners of the two sections affected were willing, if required by the council, to do so, to contribute £25 each towards the cost of the work, the letter stated. The writers asked that the drain extension be undertaken by the council as early as possible at the cost of the council. The two property owners wished to build as early as possible and in any event not later than November next. On the suggestion of the Mayor. Mr. N. H. Bull, the request was referred to the works committee for a report.
