USE OF MAIN STREET TRAFFIC LANES
Traffic lanes painted on Gladstone Road, Gisborne, at the Peel Street intersection are designed to assist traffic when changing direction to the right.
Their correct use was referred to today by the borough traffic inspector, Mr. B. M. Boyle. Motorists in Gladstone Road proceeding straight ahead or turning left should use the left lane. Traffic wishing to turn right into Peel Street should take the right lane and, because it is changing direction, must stop and give way. Through traffic can then pass on the left without having to wait, until the turning vehicle has proceeded Mr. Boyle said a tendency he had noticed since the lanes were establish ed in the case of vehicles turning right was for motorists to pull over to the left when approaching the intersection. They then had the overtaking traffic to pass through and also the oncoming traffic which made turning right at a busy intersection a difficult task. All traffic when changing direction to the right at any intersection should move towards the centre of the road when approaching the intersection. In the event of this traffic having to stop the traffic which is not turning is not delayed.
Left and right lanes on both sides of Gladstone Road arc separated by a broken white line.
