OPPONENT AT POLL OF DEFENCE MINISTER
(P.A.) DUNEDIN, Sept. 7. Mr. Gerald Lyon was last night chosen us a Nationalist. Party candidate for the St. Kilda seat in Parliament at present held by the Minister of Defence, Mr. Jones.
Mr. Lyon, who was born in Wellington, left New Zealand as a gunner in the Main Body of the First N.Z.E.F. and served throughout the war, rising to the rank of major and winning the Military Cross- He subsequently commanded the Fiftli Battery N.Z. Artillery. and the Second Field Artillery Brigade. In the Second World War he served in New Zealand, commanding the Second Brigade N.Z. Artillery and was responsible for all coastal defences in the South Island. When Japan entered the war lie was appointed General Staff Officer, Southern Commandand later commanded the Fiftli Division of artillery with the rank ot colonel. He was elected to the Picton Borough Council last year.
