N.Z. Getting Quantity Rather Than Quality In Australian Wine
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 6. "The selection of wines in Australia is very good, but the present arrangements for importing them are bad,” said Mr. H. Ritchie, chairman of the Invercargill Licensing Trust, on his return from Australia today by the Monowai.
"In New Zealand we are practically compelled to buy the poorer grades,” continued Mr. Ritciiie. "This is because wo buy on the value of the import licenses available, rather than being too concerned about the quality of what is offering. Quantity is the main thing under these circumstances.” New Zealand was not getting Australia’s best wines, lie added.
He thought the service in Australian hotels was slow compared with New Zealand, and particularly at meal times.
