SYDNEY LECTURER APPOINTED PROFESSOR AT OTAGO UNIVERSITY
(P.A.) DUNEDIN, Sept. C. Mr. John Arthur Passmore, senior lecturer in philosophy at the University of Sydney, has been appointed as professor of philosophy at the University of Otago. It is expected that Mr. Passmore will commence his duties at the beginning of the next academic year.
Mr. Passmore, who is 34 years old, is married and has two children. He was born in Sydney and graduated B.A. from Sydney University in 1934 with first-class honours in philosophy and in English literature. Next year ho graduated from the Sydney Teachers' College and was then appointed tutor in philosophy at the University of Sydney. In 1940 Mr. Passmore gained the degree of M.A. with first-class honours and the university medal with his thesis: “Hume As An Associationalist.” He was appointed assistant lecturer in philosophy in 1930, lecturer in 1944, and senior lecturer from 1940.
Mr. Passmore was awarded a special research grant for study abroad in 1948.
