HEAVIER ISSUES OF BOOKS FROM PUBLIC LIBRARY

A substantial increase in the number of issues of books during the year was noted in the annual report submitted to subscribers of the Gisborne Public Library on Thursday evening by Miss Erica Poulgrain, librarian. The total reached almost 100,000, as compared with 92.500 for the previous year.

Members of the committee and subscribers were gratified by this evidence of improved support and Mr. A. J. Stock, who presided at the annual meeting in the absence of Dr. A. L. Singer. Dresident. drew attention to the substantial increase in the book stocks which had been made, mainly as a result of the delivery of orders previously held up. Deliveries of Latest Books.

Numbers of subscribing members showed a satisfactory increase, and many adult members had taken out additional-book subscriptions during the year. Moreover, the rental scneiue was showing further progress, there being 1754 subscribers to this scheme with a total issue of 22,135 books for the year on the rental basis. Attention was drawn by the librarian to the deliveries of new books, in both fiction and non-fiction sections, and to (he increased use made of the reference section by students and others. A recommendation was made that extensions of the stocks of reference volumes should be made as opportunity occurs, since there was an assurance that the effort would be appreciated. The meeting recorded its appreciation of the work of the librarian and her staff, the chairman commenting that the library was extremely well served and that many comments favourable to the administration of the institution had been passed to him. Dr. A. L. Singer was re-elected as Dresident and Messrs. A. J. Stock and R. W. J. Edwards as vice-presidents. Retiring members of the committee were also re-elected unopposed.
