INQUIRY INTO STRANDING OF KINABATANGAN
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 13. During the marine inquiry into the stranding of the motor vessel Kinabatangan, held in the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, Mr- J. H. Luxford, S.M., asked the first mate, Mr. J. Blackburn, if the master was sober when he came on the bridge at 8 p.m. on June 10. The witness said, “No, but I do not think he was drunk enough not to navigate the ship. If that had been so I would not have left the bridge.” The second mate, Mr. J. N. Coombes, said the master appeared to be agitated and nervous when the ship stranded. He did not appear to have had any liquor. He had never seen the master incapable of commanding the ship. He had not had any fears about the master’s drinking habits. The inquiry will be resumed next week.
