DELAYED AWARDS RECALL WORLD WAR 11. HEROISM

(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 9. The Governor-General. Sir Bernard Fre.yberg, V.C., presented awards to 113 persons at an investiture in the Durham street Art Gallery this morning, when manv deeds of braverv and heroism in World War II were recalled in the citations to the awards, only 12 of which were to civilians.

Awards in the Civil Division were for outstanding public service in the spheres of law, education, welfare, sport and nursing. A total of 114 awards was presented Sergeant Eric Batchelor, of Waimate. receiving both the Distinguished Conduct Medal and bar. The principal civil award was the knighthood conferred on Sir Arthur Donnelly.
