SEVERE SHORTAGE OF COAL RELIEVED: COLLIER IN PORT
(P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 9. Four trucks of coal which arrived by rail at New Plymouth late yesterday afternoon averted a gas shortage. Stocks held by the New Plymouth Gas Company, Ltd., had, it is believed, dwindled to such a low ebb that after today it would not have been possible to maintain full gas pressure.
Before the arrival of the coal, which had left Wanganui on Friday, the seriousness of the position is reported to have been made known to the New Plymouth branch of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union. The arrival of the collier Rata from Grevmouth at 1 p.m. yesterday was expected to relieve the situation, but because of a high wind at the port, and despite an appeal to work her only to the extent of unloading sufficient coal to meet immediate needs, the union, it is understood. decided by ballot not to work the ship. When a reporter sought confirmation of this bv telephone from the union secretary, Mr. J: S. Harris, he was told: “I’ve got no information for anyone. I don’t want to hear it.”
During the week-end the gas companv was forced to borrow 30 tons of coal from the New Plymouth Harbour Board.
