Card Evening.

A flag 500 card tourney in aid of hockey funds resulted: Winning table, Messrs. I. Te Ngahue and T. Parapara and Mesdames P. Waara and R. Bristowe. Ladies’ prizes: Mesdames M. Wi Rena and R. Bristowe. Gentlemen's prize: Mr. I. Te Ngahue. Te Araroa Teams Entertained.

Following Rugby and ‘ hockey matches at Cape Runaway, Te Araroa teams were entertained at the Whangaparaoa Marae Hall on Saturday evening. Music for dancing was supplied by Mr. Manu Waititi’s orchestra and the M.C. was Mr. P. Matenga. Vocal items were contributed by Messrs. Ross White and Paul Puha and Miss Georgina Bristowe. Miss M. Swann gave a tap dance. Supper was provided by the Tikirau ladies' hockey team, who were responsible also for catering arrangements throughout the visitors’ stay at the Cape. Mr. A. Waititi was the winner of the principal competition of the evening.

At the conclusion of the entertainment Mr. Sid Waititi spoke on behalf of Tikirau Hockey Club, and Apanui Rugby Sub-union- In his reply on behalf of the Te Araroa visitors. Mr. Wi White declared that the spirit of friendly rivalry and good sportsmanship displayed indicated that the fixtures should be placed on an annual basis permanently.

Teachers Foresee Football Difficulties.

Commenting upon a scheme to place school football under the auspices of local Rugby sub-unions as explained to a Coast teachers’ meeting "in Tokomaru Bay last Saturday, Matnkaoa teachers expressed their approval on principle, but foresaw transportation difficulties.

The scheme, which would be an extension of that already operating successfully at Tolaga Bay. was propounded by the secretary of the East Coast union, Mr. J. F. Williamson. Its principal aim would be to give all boys, and not only those who arc successful in achieving selection for teams the opportunity to lparn and play Rugby. An integral part of the scheme would be voluntary transport and this, because of the dearth of family cars in their school areas, would make its institution in 'Matakaoa virtually impossible, teachers thought. Hockey Match. In an inter-club hockey match recently Tokorarangi drew with Awatere, one all. Tokorarangi’s goal was scored by S. Hurlwai. The umpires were Mr- B. Peka and Mrs. Taiperi Brown. Play Reading Group.

the Tc Araroa Play-reading Group met at Tututohora during the weekend when members were the guests oi Mr. and Mrs. N. P. Branson. The work undertaken was a drama entitled “Message for Margaret,” the principal parts being handled by, Messrs, w. L. S. Britton and F. Still and Mesdames M. Taylor and C. H- Clarke. Those also present included Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Hart, Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Taylor, Mesdames H. E. Fraser. G. A. Moore. W. R, Godfrey, D. Jackson, Messrs. W. F. Metcalfe. G. Janelli. D. Fraser, Bennett and Miss Elizabeth Fraser. Traffic Mishaps. Two accidents involving damage to vehicles, but fortunately lacking casualties. occurred in the district last week. A light delivery truck was considerably damaged when it carrie into collision with a heavy timber truck at a bad bend at the fool of Hospital Hill on the Awatere side. On the Kokomoku a truck which got into difficulties in a watertable. became out of control during efforts to extricate it and left the road, to somersault twice before coining to rest. Neither the driver nor his wife, who accompanied him, suffered serious injury. Personal Notes.

Mr- W, Perston. who has been an inmate at Te Puia Hospital; has returned to his home at Te Araroa. — Staying with her mother, Mrs. Carlson, Rewetu. recently, was Mrs. C. Rau, Opotiki.—Mr. and Mrs. J. Chambers, who are awaiting passage to England, are at present the guests of Mrs. Carlson at Rewetu station.
