VESPA WASP APPEARS IN S. HAWKE’S BAY

(P.A.)

HASTINGS, April 7

A worker wasp of the Vespa Germanica species has been found on the property of a Waipawa resident. It is the first reported appearance of this wasp in Hawke's Bay though it has been rapidly spreading over the North Island since it was first identified near Hamilton in 1945.

It is thought that the wasp may have been introduced in a case of fruit brought into Waipawa from the Tauranga district. Efforts are being made to trace the queen as it is felt certain that the wasp captured will have come from a colony established in the district.
