Surgery For Famous Tree

New Plymouth’s famous Spanish chestnut tree in Brooklands Park is again in the news. Some time ago it was treated for borer in one of its branches; now it has had to have a limb amputated. The limb, which weighed about a ton, gave way under the strain of exceptionally heavy new growth this summer. The parks superintendent, Mr. T. Horton, said that the application of approved principles of tree surgery and dressing would enable the blemish'to be removed quickly. The tree, which is more than 100 years old and renowned for its gigantic spread, shows little change in appearance.
