PARENTS PROTEST AT TRANSFER OF MAKAURI PUPILS

A sharp protest against the decision of the Hawke’s Bay'Education Board to transfer pupils in Forms I and II of the Makauri School to the Gisborne Intermediate School was registered at a meeting this week of parents of pupils of the Makauri School. It was pointed out that such a transfer would lower the status of the school.

To a suggestion that the Dupils would have better facilities at the Gisborne Intermediate School, some parents felt there was scope for providing these facilities at the Makauri School. The opinion was expressed that the standard of education at the Makauri School was as good as that at. the Gisborne Intermediate School.

The proposal ,it is understood, has the support of parents of pupils from the Waerenga-a-hika district. Householders at the meeting felt that the distnet roll numbers should be considered. The school roll comprised about 134 pupils and Makauri contributed approximately 100. the balance coming from Waerenga-a-Hika.

Mr. M. P Kippenberger presided over the meeting, which was attended by about 50 parents.

The protest is to be forwarded to the board.
