GISBORNE HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES CREATE RECORDS
The breaking of eight records, with the possibility of a further five records being credited to them, was the excellent performance put up by a party of 26 pupils from the Gisborne High School who competed on Saturday at the Hawke’s Bay secondary schools athletic sports in Waipukurau. Consisting of 19 boys and seven girls, the team travelled to Waipukurau on Friday and returned yesterday. They were under the charge of Mr. A. F. Gardiner and Miss S. Cox.
In all, between 150 and 200 secondary school pupils from 11 schools in the Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay districts took part in the sports, which were held in fine, but rather gusty weather. The Gisborne High School team gained 15 first, 13 second, - , and five third placings in the track and field events for which they entered.
Of the seven girls in the team, three broke records previously established at the sports. The records broken were:— High jump, junior, Cynthia Kane; hop, step and jump, senior, Pam Williamson; 75yds intermediate, Joy Howell.
Five records were broken by five different boys from the Gisborne High School These were: - High jump, junior, Brown; high jump, senior Vette; broad jump, junior. Carrington; broad jump, senior, Meban; 440yds. junior, Preston. With the wind behind the runners in the straight track events it was felt that they might have gained some slight assistance. For this reason it is doubtful whether five record times set up by Gisborne High School boys will be recognised. The events in which these records were broken were:—looyds, senior and 220yds, senior. R Meban; 120yds hurdles, senior. Vette: 120yds hurdles, intermediate, Sheridan; 80 metres hurdles, Mclldowie.
