SAWDOCTOR FINED £25 AS BOOKMAKER AND £lO AS DRUNKEN DRIVER

(P.A.) ROTORUA, Mar. ?8. A 33-year-old sawdoctor, Edward Alexander Robertson, married, of Rotorua, was fined £25 in the Police Court today when he pleaded guilty to a charge of having carried on business as a bookmaker.

It was stated by Sergeant J. IT. Quartley that the accused, who had a conviction for bookmaking two months ago, was on March 21 in possession of a doubles chart for a race meeting at Ellerslie. Receipt books accounted for 75 bets ranging from £2O to ss. The accused pleaded guilty to further charges that he had been intoxicated whilst the driver of a motor vehicle and that the vehicle was not covered by a warrant of fitness. It was explained that a traffic inspector had pursued and overtaken a truck which was being driven erratically near Rotorua. When the driver was questioned he appeared to be drunk and the inspector took him to the police station.

On the intoxicated-driving charge the accused was fined £lO and his driving license was suspended for 12 months. For driving the vehicle without a warrant of fiitness, he was fined another £2. The accused agreed to take out a prohibition order against himself.
