WREATHS LAID AT TOMB IN MEMORY OF MR. M. J. SAVAGE
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Mar. 23.
In spite of a high wind and a threat of rain, between 600 and 700 people gathered at the tomb of Labour’s first Prime Minister, Mr. M. J. Savage, at Bastion Point, Orakei, yesterday, the ninth anniversary of his death.
Following an address by the Prime Minister, Mr. P. Fraser, more than two dozen wreaths were laid and the crowd filed slowly through the huge mausoleum.
The official party included the Mayor, Mr. J. A. C. Alluni, the Minister of Works, Mr,. R. Semple, Auckland Labour members of Parliament and members of the Legislative Council, and the Under-Secretary of Works, Mr. M. Moohan, M.P. As it moved on to the courtyard it was greeted by a traditional wail from a Maori woman elder, and a lament was played by the Waterside Workers’ Silver Band.
