MAKO SHARK CAUGHT OFF WELLINGTON

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Mar. 8. A 15ft. Mako shark was recently caught off Palliser Bay by Mr. M. Meo, Eastbourne, and his two sons. They were fishing from their 45ft. motor-launch San Michele, about five or six miles from the entrance to Wellington Harbour.

The shark was caught on a hook attached to a wire drag line set with 65 hooks. The line and hooks became hopelessly entangled as a result of the efforts of the shark to escape. The four men aboard the launch had to exert all their strength until the line was attached to the power winch of the launch. It was slowly hauled up to the surface.

When the shark broke surface beside the launch it was apparent that it would require at least six men to get it aboard. When the line was cleared the shark sank.

Fishermen off Wellington Heads report that there are an unusually large number of sharks in the vicinity, especially a blue variety.
