“Proposal Hardly Feasible”
An appeal to Sir Peter Buck to return from Hawaii and give of his store of knowledge to both Maori and European, was made by Tohuroa Parata, a leading Te Ati Awa chief, at the Ngati Poneke’s reception to Sir Peter. Mr. Parata, addressing the Prime Minister, Mr. P. Fraser, said it would be fitting to bring Sir Pete: back as the first New Zealand-born Governor-General.
Replying, Sir Peter, said, laughingly, when he heard Mr. Parata’s remarks to Mr. Fraser he thought the speaker wanted the Prime Minister to resign in his favour. However, he had not the slightest interest in politics personally.
As for the Governor-Generalship Sir Peter said it was hardly feasible, though he did appreciate the compliment ns an expression of confidence from the Maori people.
