ARAWA TEAM’S GOOD VICTORY IN COAST TENNIS
The third and final day of play in the Horouta Lawn Tennis SubAssociation’s Maori tournament at Ruatoria sa\v the unique position arise of a Horouta representative opposed to an Arawa in the finals of all five events — singles, doubles and combined doubles. All other districts were put out in the earlier games.
Four of the championships went to Arawa, and only one to Horouta —the ladies’ singles, won by the N.Z. Maori title ho’der. Miss L. Karauti. In this final Miss P. Davis pressed the champion to a close decision, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. With Miss Te Moni. Miss Davis won the ladies’ doubles, and went on to win the combined doubles with B. Morrison, winner also of the men’s singles championship. Total points for the Ngarimu Memorial trophy, the premier cup, in the senior section were as follows: For Arawa.—B Morrison, 14; Miss P. Davis. 11: T. Nuri, 11. Mohi, 4; Miss 11. Te Moni, 3; total, 36. For Horouta.—Miss L. Karauti, 9; L. Dain, 7: Mrs. J. Te Moana, W. Taare, R. Kerr, 2; Mrs. S. Goldsmith, 1; total, 23. In the junior section Arawa gained 32 points to all other teams combined, nil, making Arawa’s final score 68 Doints to 23.
Two outstanding features characterised the whole tournament and these were mentioned by Mr. R. Morrison, who was presented with the Ngarimu Cup on behalf of Arawa. He spoke of the feeling of comradeship that existed between all the players and the efficient organisation and management of the whole tournament by the Horouta officials. Sir Apirana Ngata also extended his congratulations to the committee, to all winners, and to the Arawa selectors of such a young team which could be expected to profit by mnnv such tournaments to come.
