TWO TO DIE FOR MURDER OF GANDHI : POLICE SLATED
(10.30 a.m.) NEW DELHI, Feb. 10. A special court today sentenced to death Nathuram Vinayak G-odse, the assassin of Mr. Gandhi. Narayeen Apte was also sentenced to death for complicity in the murder.
Five others were sentenced to transportation for life. The eighth man was found not guilty and acquitted.
Gandhi's life which disclosed there was another plot to kill him. “Yet the police miserably failed to derive any advantage from these statements,” he added. “Had the slightest keenness been shown in the investigation of tire case at that stage, the tragedy probably could have been averted. “The act of Nathuram Godse in committing the murder of Mr. Gandhi was a deliberate and calculated one. No extenuating circumstances have been pointed out nor could have been pointed out on his behalf. “Narayan Aplc’s act in abetting the offence of murder was no less heinous. Had it. not been for his brainwork, the murder probably would never have been committed.”
Security arrangements were enforced throughout India a few hours before the judgment was delivered. All the defendants entered the court laughing and chatting. When they were led out, after being sentenced, they began shouting slogans with Godse’s voice heard above the others, crying: “We will conquer Pakistan! Long Live Hindustan!” He then laughed loudly. Judge Atma Charan, in bis judgment, criticised the police “slackness” in not averting Mr. Gandhi’s death. Judge Charan pointed out that the police acquired statements after a previous unsuccessful attempt on Mr.
