JUDGMENT FOR DEFENDANTS: LIBEL ALLEGATION
AUCKLAND. Dec. 14. The action for alleged libel brought by the president of the Auckland Suburban Drainage League, Dove Myer Robinson (Mr. T. Henry and Mr. A. K. Turner) against the Mayor of Auckland and chairman of the Metropolitan Drainage Board, John Andrew Charles Allum (Mr. A. K. North. K.C.. and Mr. H. J. Butler) and Wilson and Horton, Limited (Mr. H. P. Richmond) ended in favour of the two defendants. The jury returned after an absence of a little" over an hour. The action, which began on Monday of last week, was heard by Mr. Northcroft and a special jury. Plaintiff sought £SOO damages from each defendant for a statement published in the New Zealand Herald on November 13, 1947. The statement was a criticism by the Mayor of a pamphlet published by the Drainage League.
The three final addresses by counsel and His Honour's summing up were heard yesterday. The question of costs has yet to be decided.
