Accidents With Axes

Two patients were admitted to the Cook Hospital yesterday after having* accidentally cut themselves with axes while chopping wood. The first to be admitted was Mrs. Mary Waikato, Ngatapa, who was reported to be comfortable this morning. Mr. Harold Broome, Gladstone road, an employee of the Gisborne Box Company, who was also injured yesterday, was reported this morning to be comfortable. Experiments With Maize "We had extremely bad luck; most of the trials were wiped out,” said the Fields Division instructor to the Department of Agriculture, Mr. H. dcO. Chamberlain, when reporting to a meeting of the agricultural section of Federated Farmers last night on the subject of the maize trials of last season. The trials at Mr. E. K. F. Cameron's at Bushmere were untouched by the flood, he said, and it had been found that “for one year only and on one farm only" nine double hybrids had yielded better than Pfister. U.S. 13 had returned the best yield with 146 bushels to the acre, a yield that might improve by 25 per cent under good conditions. Mr. G. H. Cooper said it had been his experience that U.S. 13 stood up well “to wind and water.” The section was most appreciative of Mr. Chamberlain’s efforts, and it was decided that a letter should be sent to the Field Division headquarters expressing that appreciation.
