FOG AND RAIN FOR KING’S BIRTHDAY

(10 a.m.) SYDNEY, June 15.

The King's Birthday was celebrated throughout Australia yesterday. Melbourne experienced a dense fog which closed the Essendon airport for most of the day and delayed the start of the races at Flemington. Racegoers had a restricted view of the races.

Heavy rain fell in Sydney early yesterday morning, but the weather was fine though dull all day. The Winter Stakes, run at Randwick, resulted: Spearex, 8.8 (Cook), 1; Herbert River, 8.13 (Selhvood), 2; New Cashmere, 8.4 (Eaves), 3. Fourteen started. A nose; a head. Time, 2.58.
