HOCKEY UMPIRES CALL OFF “STRIKE”

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 15. The Wellington Hockey Umpires’ Association last night decided not to proceed with “strike” action which it considered at its previous meeting on May 31. The umpires then agreed to stand down next Saturday if there was not a better response to their appeal for more members.

It was reported last night that five new umpires had offered to serve permanently, and it was considered that this would enable the work to be carried on satisfactorily, at least for this Saturday.
