TWO WOMEN DOCTORS ACQUITTED

LONDON, May 20,

Mr. Justice Morris, at the Old Bailey, acquitted a gynaecologist, Dr. Eleanore Bergmann performed four operations, and Dr. Mary Been Ferguson, aged 60, of Marylebone, on charges of having performed illegal operations. The prosecution alleged that Dr. Bargman performed four operations, and also that Dr, Ferguson provided certificates saying the operations were necessary in two cases because the women would be mental wrecks if they gave birth to children.

The judge said purely personal reasons for not having a baby, as opposed to physical ones, were of no validity, and obviously should put a doctor on his guard. “It is imperative that doctors should not yield to temptation to help someone in acute distress. That is not the law,” he said.
