Following a hearing in the Magistrate’s Court in Ruatoria on Friday, a Maori labourer, Tiopira Tautuhi, was committed to the Supreme Court at Gisborne for trial on a charge of stealing one sheep, valued at 30s, the property of Hirohi Tangare, Waikare, Rangitukia. The accused pleaded not guilty. Messrs. H. G- Burnett and R. H. Wicksteed, J.Ps., were on the Bench, Mr. K. Gillanders Scott appeared for the accused, and Senior-Sergeant C. H. Reardon prosecuted. Bail, on the accused’s own recognisance of £2OO was allowed. The registered earmark used by Waikare, was produced by the registrar of brands at Gisborne, Ernest Blair Smythe. George Sexton, farmer, Rangitukia, said that on January 10 he saw the accused killing a sheep, which bore Waikare’s earmark. Waikare stated that the accused had no authority to take a sheep off his property on the date in question. Tautuhi did have authority to take and kill a sheep on occasions when he specifically asked for one. . Constable D. P. Motley said that when he visited Tautuki’s house, he saw a sheep-skin hanging on a fence. Waikare’s son said that the skin bore the registered earmark of his father.
