MANGATU LABOURER COMMITTED FOR TRIAL

Pleading not guilty to a charge of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girt a n ed 14 years at Mangatu on December 25 last, a 24-year-old Maori labourer of the ’ Mangatu pa. Ray Kokiri, was committed to the Supreme Court at Gisborne for trial, after the hearing ot evidence bv Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court in Gisborne yesterday. Kokiri, who was represented by Mr W C Kohn, was granted bail of tau on his own recognisance and one surety of £SO. Detective-Sergeant R. H. Water son prosecuted Evidence of his examination of a girl on February 19 was givenby Dr. L. G. Ellis, Te Karaka. The girl’s birth certificate was produced bv her mother, while the girl herself told of two alleged happenings near Whatatutu in December and January last when the accused was with her. Evidence that she had seen the accused and the girl together after the pictures at Whatat-utu on one occ sion was given by a 15-year-old girl. Ben Palci Brown, station , manager, Whatatutu, stated that following an inquiry by the tribal committee at Mangatu pa o n February 8, the accused said to him in Maori, “I am caught.
