“THE RISK OF WAR HAS NOT BEEN REMOVED”

—SIR KEITH PARK

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 14. »»TN 1940 it was the Battle of 1 Britain; in 1960 it may be the Battle of New Zealand,” said Sir Keith. Park, wartime Air Force leader, addressing a Rotary luncheon today on the influence of air power in war. “War is a wasteful and inefficient method of arbitration, yet although UNO is a fine ideal the risk of war has not been removed” he said.

The British Empire must be defended. A proper balance of armed forces was essential. In Britain the Government had declared the Royal Air Force the first line of defence. It was essential to remain air-minded. The Air Force Association was half a million strong in Britain, and well established in Australia, but New Zealand, however, was lagging. Sir Keith Park warned that this drift could be dangerous.
