“WELLINGTON SUITABLE FLYING-BOAT BASE”

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 15. “Wellington Harbour is quite suitable for a flying-boat base for civil aviation purposes,” said Mr. D. Martin, Wellington.

Mr, Martin, who was a wartime flight-commander of No. 5 and No, 6 flying-boat squadrons, has used many flying-boat bases in the Pacific as well as in other parts of the world. There was, he said, no reason from a flying point of view why Wellington should not have been in full operation as a flying-boat base for the past two years.

In some respects Wellington Harbour was more suitable as a flying-boat base than Auckland Harbour, he said. Auckland Harbour was far from perfect as a flying-boat base. In north-easterly and south-easterly winds across Auckland Harbour the approaches were not the best for landing a flying-boat and the runways in those winds were not long enough, except in the upper harbour, which at certain states of the tide did not contain sufficient water for large flying-boats. In Auckland Harbour a flying-boat had to take off out of the wind and this practice, he said, was far from desirable.
