5485 STILL LIVE IN ARMY HUTS
MELBOURNE, May 20. Thirty-two months after the war, 5458 victims of a war-borne housing shortage will spend this winter in converted Army huts in “emergency’ accommodation camps set up two years ago by the Government. At present Camp Pell is housing 580 families (2581 people) and Watsoma 253 families (1134). These figures were given today by the State Housing Minister, Mr. Warner. Until “vacancies” occurred at camps, accommodation could be found only for shelterless families with young children evicted from their homes by Court orders, he said. Evictions granted by Courts in the six months ended March 31 of this year totalled 612. In the same period of last year the number was 739. Mr. Warner said that no more Army huts were available and the Army had recently re-possessed the Yarraville camp. In addition, the hospital at Larundel was being progressively vacated by tenants. Of 112 families originally housed there 42 still remained.
