(Herald Correspondent.) “Good counsel and good sense should have prevailed before this case got this far,” said Mr. L. G. H. Sinclair, S.M., in the Wairoa Magistrate’s Court in awarding C. J. Tapper 25s and costs 11s in a claim for that amount from William Godman, both of Tuai. for a ewe lamb which had been worried by two dogs owned by the defendant. His Worship refused to allow Tapper witnesses’ expenses. A fine of £ls, with costs £5 10s, was imposed on William Lawrence, farmer, Morere, who was found guilty in the Wairoa Magistrate’s Court of stealing one breeding ewe, the property of Clifford Thomas Hill, valued at 355. Detec-tive-Sergeant A. Reid, Napier, prosecuted, and Mr. L. T. Burnard, Gisborne, appeared for the accused. On Thursday evening Mr. C. G. E. Harker, M.P., delivered a pre-sessional address in Wairoa, the Mayor, Mr. C. V. Chamberlain, presiding. Due to the stormy weather, the attendance was not very large. The speaker dealt at length with legislation passed last session and also indulged in strong criticism of-the Communist element so active in the Dominion today. Mr. and Mrs. P. Hogan, Wellington, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. V. Fraser, Wairoa.
Mr. and Mrs. McGregor, Oamaru, have been on a short visit to Wairoa. Some years ago Mr. McGregor was officer in charge of the Wairoa police station, being later transferred to Oamaru. Prices realised at the Wairoa stock sale last week were:—P.A. bullocks, £l2 5s to £l3 2s; Hereford bullocks, £ll 5s to £l2 ss; 2-year P.A, heifers, £5; good woolly wether hoggets, 23s 9d; good ’Down cross hoggets, 22s 6d to 25s 6d; medium 'Down cross hoggets, 18s 6d; mixed sex hoggets, 19s 6d; empty 2-tooth ewes (small), 25s Id,
