ANALYSIS OF SILT TO BE MADE
“In response to requests from several farmers on the flats, a sample of the silt is being sent to the laboratory for analysis and the results will be published as soon as they are available,” said Mr. I. J. Pohlen, senior pedologist to the Soil Survey Division, Soil Bureau, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and officer in charge of soil surveys on ihe East Coast stationed at Hastings. Mr. Pohlen has been in Gisborne making a preliminary survey of the fiats in connection with the detailed soil survey to be undertaken in the near future.
As a general rule. Mr. Pohlen said, the main deficiency in the silt deposits was nitrogen. The silts would generally form good soil and deterioration of the silted land occurred only when the character of the silt was changed, for example, when sands covered previously loamy soils.
