SPECULATION ON GISBORNE’S NEW RADIO STATION

There has been constant speculation in Gisborne lately concerning the establishment of a new broadcast station in the town, but the matter is me on which Government officials so far have had nothing to say. It is believed, however, that plans for a new station have been drawn up and that a central building has been selected in Gisborne for the studio. The plans, it is understood, make provision for a roomy studio, wnicn will accommodate a reasonable number of performers for direct broadcasting. although it will not be large enough to house a big band or anything of that nature: there will also be all the other necessarv offices, a control room, space for records and so on. The whole project is planned on modern. attractive lines. Those interested in the establishment of a new station in Gisborne find jt hard to understand why its erection is still surrounded in mvstery. It is understood that the necessary transmitting material is in the country: the desired building is apparently _ available for the studio: and there is little likelihood of building permits holding up progress. Acoustically-treated material used for radio stations is not one of the rationed essential materials and the building in which it is proposed to house the studio apparently has plenty of material in it which could be used for partitioning. There is. of course, the question of a s itr. for n transmission tower and it is thought in some circles lhat the hold-up in starting Gisborne’s radio station may be the difficulty of finding suitable land in or near Gisborne.
