FIVE PRISONERS ESCAPE FROM WAIKUNE CAMP
(P.A.) TAUMARUNUI, June 11. Five prisoners who arrived by the express from Auckland last night for the Waikune prison camp soon gained their liberty, escaping from Waikune at about 4 o’clock this morning. It is thought that they may have boarded a north-bound goods train passing throuh National Park about ihe time of the escape. All the escaped men were dressed in civilian clothes when they escaped. The names of the escaped prisoners are:—Lennard Lloyd Ward Dean, aged ■24, Lennard Albert Wells, aged 25, Ivan Henry Henwood, aged 21, Dawson Gus King, aged 25, and Reuben Te Whaitai Repia, aged 23. WIDESPREAD SEARCH FOR PRISONERS (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, June 12. None of the five prisoners who escaped from the Waikune prison camp yesterday had been recaptured late last night. A widespread search for the men was made throughout the day in an area surrounding the camp and all police were put on the alert. Railwaymen on Main Trunk trains were requested to watch for attempts to board trains.
