GANGS STRIP LEAD FROM CHURCH ROOFS
IPSWICH, March 27,
Gangs are at work in East Anglia stripping lead from the roofs of churches. In one night a ton of lead was stolen from an ancient church in Eltisley.
Thieves, using modern methods, are making a fortune from the roofs of famous old churches which have stood unscathed in sleepy villages for many centuries.
The lend is melted into ingots and sold on the black market at £3OO a ton. More than 2PO churches have already been robbed.
Piping from the outsides of houses and telephone cables are also being stolen on such a scale that in some villages night vigilante associations have been formed.
