SHIP’S CREW PAID OFF

DISPUTE ON COLLIER (P.A.) WELLINGTON. April 29. The collier Kairnai which had been delayed for some days in her departure from Wellington for Greymouth, first by a shortage of firemen and then by a dispute between the seamen and the cook, was laid up yesterday by the Union Steam Ship Company. The crew was paid off. Company officials could give no indication how long the Kairnai would be out of commission. “The vessel is laid up until the dispute between the crow and the cook is settled,” they said. The second collier delayed by crew trouble, the Wingatui, which was to have sailed early last week for Westport, was still moored at the dock wharf last night short of five firemen and a greaser. Officials were hopeful that the crew shortage would be made up today.
