WILD LIFE CONTROL

NEW ZEALAND ISLANDS MORE DIRECT ACTION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 28. Tiie Snares Lad been recently declared a scenic reserve and it was likely that the fauna and flora of New Zealand's sub-Antarctic Islands would shortly be brought under more direct control for their preservation, said the director of the Dominion Museum. Dr. ft. A. Falla, at a meeting of the Forest and Bird Protection Society. Dr. Falla said that most of the outlying islands classed as scenic reserves had been ravaged by exotic animals and plants through lack of ranging. In some eases a good job had been done in ridding the reserves of pests—pigs on the Poor Knights and goats on the Three Kings, for instance. Other scenic reserves were not effectively ranged, included the Hen and Chickens, part of Mayor Island, and small islands ofi‘ Stewart Island and the sub-Antarctic islands. It was likely that in the near future New Zealand's sub-Antarctic islands would be taken over for more direct control and preservation.
