FREE MEDICINES

PRESCRIPTIONS LIMITED AUSTRALIAN SCHEME SYDNEY, April 27. To suggest that the Commonwealth’s free medicine formulary was adjusted to fit the Budget was undiluted nonsense, said the Federal Government spokesman, commenting on a statement by Dr. J. L, Hunter, secretary of the British Medical Association. The panel of doctors, chemists and pharmacologists prepared the formulary They were not restricted m any way in the availability or expense of drugs. The only consideration was what was necessary in the interests of the public. Sulpha drugs, penicillin insulin and liver extract, were included in the formulary which was restricted to 6UU prescriptions because it was necessary to fix the benefit and the price of each. The scheme differed from that pf New Zealand which did not determine the price in advance. Doctors could prescribe as they pleased but only prescriptions which kept to the formulary would be free.
