DEGREES FOR SALE
AMERICAN “UNIVERSITY'* WASHINGTON. March 18. It is still possible to buy “university degrees” in the United States. Five clergymen from North Carolina testified at a Federal Trade Commission hearing that they obtained by mail, and without study, degrees ranging from Bachelor of Theology to Doctor of Philosophy upon payment of 50 dollars to an organisation, which described itself as Mt. Vernon University, Washington. The Federal Trade Commission alleges that this organisation has only an office and some classrooms in Washington. Its literature claims that it maintains branch schools in other parts of the United States. C. F. Todd, a radio station owner, testified that he was sent a degree through the mail by Mt. Vernon University, but neither accepted it nor paid the 50 dollars asked. —-" ~ '
