PASSENGERS ANNOYED
CONDITIONS IN SHIP
FOOD POISONING ALLEGED SYDNEY, April 13. About 200 passengers by the Marine Phoenix are claimed to have suffered from food poisoning during the Tasman crossing. The vessel arrived here yesterday from San Francisco and Auckland with GOO passengers. "Conditions aboard were worse than on a troopship, said an Auckland businessman, Mr. Neville Carlson. “1 was sick, and the doctors ordered me food that the stewards would not let me have. The decks were filthy and the ship was never properly cleaned or inspected.” The ship’s surgeon, Dr. Hardy, commented: "You can get 10 per cent food poisoning in the best hotels. We did not have more than that." Captain E. R Johanson blamed the passengers for the condition of his vessel. “As for sickness among the babies,” he added, “ can I help it if mothers do not know how to look after them?"
