HOTELS DEFENDED

AUCKLAND REACTIONS “NO CASES FOR YEARS” (P.A.)_ AUCKLAND, April 14. “It is the first time we’ve heard of food poisoning in the company's ships,” said Mr. A. E. Playle, manager of Messrs. Henderson and Macfarlane, the Matson Line agents in Auckland, in reference to the Sydney cable alleging food poisoning on the Marine Phoenix. Astonishment was expressed by medical men and hotel interests in Auckland at the statement attributed to the ship’s doctor, “You get 10 per cent food poisoning in the best hotels.” One hotel manager hoped the public would not become alarmed, as there was a most rigorous inspection of food at all hotels, and little, if any, tinned food was used. He had heard of no cases of food poisoning in hotels for years.

Cmmenting earlier, Mr. Playle said: “I think the ship’s doctor has been misquoted.”
