MULLETT’S FUTURE

VISIT TO STH. AFRICA? NATAL CLUB’S INTEREST FIRST OPTION WANTED ip A ) WELLINGTON, April 14. The Natal Sporting Club, Durban, has cabled to Don Mullett, the New Zealand heavyweight boxing champion- “We understand you are interested in fighting in South Africa. We wish first option on your services. Cable urgent reply, stating terms.” The cable was passed on to Mullett’s father who said Mullet was expected to arrive in Wellington from Palmerston North this afternoon. Though Mullett was beaten on points by Dave Sands, the Australian triple champion, at Petone on Saturday night, he proved to be much harder to beat than eithei Sands or the latter’s manager, Mr. Tom Macquire, anticipated. “This was confirmed by Mr Maguire, who said Sands really had to work hard to win and added that there was only one thing left for Mullett to do and that was to go to South Africa. There was nothing for Mullett in New Zealand nor Australia, where Sands had beaten all the available heavyweights. Despite the defeats which Mullett suffered against Jack Johnston, Mr. Maguire does not think there is a heavyweight in Australia who could stand up to Mullett in the latter’s present form If Mullett decides to go to South Africa, he will probably discuss with Mr. Maquire the terms he should ask. Mr. Maquire said today that the Australian heavyweight, Alt' Gallagher, who was at present in South Africa, went with a transportation paid guarantee for his first fight, with the option of accepting a percentage and an option over further fights. Mr. Steve Havill. Mullett’s manager, said tonight that the champion would have to submit his terms to the Natal Sporting Club and await a reply before making a decision. He opined however, that Mullet was likely to accept the offer.
