WAIROA NEWS

(S.R.) WAIROA, March 23. Appearing before Messrs. T. Sweetman and G. A. Thompson, J.P.s, in the Wairoa Police Court yesterday, Charles Cooper, aged 31, contractor, pleaded guilty to assaulting Johnny Roberts at Te Reinga last Saturday. Constable J. J. King gave evidence. The defendant was fined £2, with costs 10s.

The championships of the Wairoa Tennis Club have been won as follows: —Singles.—Women: Miss E. Marshall. Men. E. Handyside. Doubles. —Women: Misses Kenny and Marshall. Men: L. A. Best and Handyside. Mixed: Best and Mrs. Best. Handicap Singles.— Women: Miss Kenny. Men: Handyside. Handicap Doubles. —Women: Mrs. Smith and Miss Marshall. Men: E. M. Halstead and R. Crarer. Combined: Driscoll and Miss Archibald.

In answer to an inquiry by the Wairoa delegates to the annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union on Saturday evening .it was learned that up to the present no advice had been received from the New Zealand union regarding an allocation of petrol for Rugby country teams. It was decided to write to the union seeking the same allocation as that allowed during the war years, but the Wairoa delegates did not agree that this would be anywhere near sufficient, due to the long distances that country clubs had to travel. A decision was also reached to again conduct a sub-union day at which teams from all sub.-unions would compete. This was set down for May 29. The officers elected at the annual meeting of the Wairoa Sub-Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society were: —President, the Rev. A. R. H. Morris; vice-presidents, Mesdames Parsons and Corbett, Messrs. I. C. Moore and C. V Chamberlain; hon. secretary. Miss L. Heslop; hon. treasurer. Mr. R. A. Peez; hon. auditor, Mr. W. A. Crarer; committee, Mesdames Edwards, Nolan, C. Sainsbury, Crarer and Lancaster, and Miss McAndrew. At the annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Rugby. Union, Mr, V. Fraser. Wairoa, was elected president for the ensuing year.
