DESERTER SENTENCED

90 DAYS IMPRISONMENT (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 23. At a court martial held at Burnham the sentence was announced in the court after the hearing whereas formerly it was the practice for the sentence to be promulgated by the officer commanding the district.

Private Thomas Henry Dreaneen, formerly of No; 1 Training Battalion, Trentham, was charged with deserting the Army in that he absented himself without leave from January 4, 1944, until he gave himself up at Christchurch on March 9, 1948. He pleaded guilty. It was stated that Dreaneen joined the Army at the age of 19 years. He did not like the Army and thought he could do better for his country by working in the bush as he was a trained bushman. His father was dead and he wanted to earn money to send home to his mother. He had changed his name and had moved from one job to another.

Dreaneen was sentenced to 90 days’ imprisonment with hard labour, the sentence to be subject to confirmation by the officer commanding, Southern Military District.
