DRAINS RAPIDLY MADE
MACHINE AT WAIROA WORK AT SHOWGROUNDS (S.R.) WAIROA, March 12. To lay over a mile and a half of tile draining in four days has been accomplished by the Roteho machine placed at the disposal of the Wairoa A. and P, Society by Massey College. Eight thousand tiles have been laid and when the work is completed the showgrounds should be available for use during even the wettest weather. Yesterday over 200 people watched the machine at work and to hear a talk by Mr. D. G. Bowler, fields supervisor of Massey College, in the capabilities of the plant. In addition to the laying of tiles other work has been carried out in connection with the scheme, including the formation of a deep drain from the entrance to the grounds down Ruataniwha road and across that highway to the Wairoa River. There is ample fall and the drain should prove capable of carrying huge quantities of water. It is anticipated that the work will cost £6OO, but as a result of a number of donations, cash and stock, it is hoped that the society’s expenditure on the scheme will be considerably lessened.
