OBITUARY

- - MR. FRED. STENNER SOUTH AFRICAN VETERAN The death occurred at the Cook Hospital yesterday of Mr. Frederick Stenner a well-known grocer who had been in Gisborne for the past 38 years. He had been ill only a short time, Mr. Stenner was born in London in 1882, and came to New Zealand after service with the British Army, in which he took part in the South African War. Mr. Stenner was employed first at Whatatutu for two years, and then took up a bakery business at Tokomaru Bay. He later moved to Wairoa, but returned to Gisborne, Qfter a short time, and entered the g'rocery business on his own account. He became widely known in the trade, and won popularity and respect in the community. He is survived by Mrs. Stenner, formerly Miss Sarah Elizabeth Louden, Gisborne, and two sons, Messrs. F. J. Stenner and E. J. Stenner, both of Gisborne. The'funeral was arranged for this afternoon, following a service at Mr. Stenner’s late residence at 3 o'clock.

MR. ARTHUR T. SPAIN

The death occurred in Wellington on Thursday of Mr. Arthur Temple Spain, aged 77 years, formerly associated for a number of years with the Gisborne district and from 1888 to 1936 a member of the staff of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd. Mr. Spain joined the company at Oamaru and five years later was appointed accountant at the Feilding branch. He was manager at Masterton from 1911 until transferred in a similar capacity to Gisborne in 1920. After six years in this district he was again transferred, this time to the managership at Napier with control over the company's operations in Hawke's Bay. He held that post until his retirement. in 1936.

In every post he held Mr. Spain earned the respect of those who dealt with him, and he was regarded highly by farmers in this district, who will extend deep sympathy to Mrs. Spain and her one son, at present a patient at Wellington Hospital as a result of severe war wounds.
