STRONG DEFENCES
GUARANTEE OF PEACE “TAKE REALISTIC VIEW” ETERNAL VIGILANCE (P.A.) DUNEDIN, March 9. The place of Britain as a bulwark of freedom and the need tor a realistic view of “things as they are" were emphasised by the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg, when he opened the second conference of the 53rd district of Rotary International in Dunedin today There was truth in the old adage, said the Governor-General that “the price of freedom is eternal vigilance.” He was pleased to see that the conference was to discuss planning and working for world peace, said Sir Bernard, for it was a very important subject. “I think most of us who took part in two world wars remember the years when we had to fight against a country that was fully armed,” he said. “I hope you will remember that, and 1 hope you will remember another thing that is very important, that the whole of the civilised world, free world, is looking to Great Britain for leadership and we must not fail them.
“I am certain that the greatest insurance for world peace is a strong united England and a strong America.”
